LED masks love to advertise a big number — 100, 300, 1000 LEDs. It sounds like more must be better, and up to a point it is. But the raw count alone can be misleading. Here's what the number actually tells you, and the specs that matter more.

What LED count actually measures

LED count is really a proxy for coverage and evenness. Each diode is a point source of light. Space too few of them across a full-face mask and you get bright spots directly under each LED with dimmer gaps in between — meaning uneven treatment, with your nose, jaw, and hairline contours getting less. Pack in more diodes and the light overlaps into a continuous, even field. So the number matters, but only because of what it does for coverage.

The practical threshold: 250+ for full-face

For a mask that genuinely covers the whole face — forehead, cheeks, nose, chin, jawline — you want roughly 250 LEDs or more. Below that, a mask is often only treating the flat central zones and skipping the contours. The AURA Lite runs 272 LEDs and the AURA 4D runs 320, both above the threshold for even full-face coverage. A "100 LED" mask usually can't cover a whole adult face evenly, whatever the marketing says.

Why more isn't automatically better

Past good coverage, adding hundreds more LEDs delivers diminishing returns — and some very high counts are marketing theater, using tiny low-output diodes that inflate the number without adding meaningful light. A mask with 300 well-specified LEDs at the right wavelengths and adequate output beats one boasting 1000 weak ones. The count is a starting filter, not the finish line.

The specs that matter more than the number

Once a mask clears the coverage bar, these matter more:

  • Wavelengths. Which colors, and how many? Red, blue, amber, and near-infrared each target a different concern at a different depth. A single-wavelength mask with 500 LEDs still only does one job. See The Science.
  • Actual output (irradiance). The real light energy reaching your skin. Hard to see on a spec sheet, which is exactly why FDA clearance matters — it means the output was reviewed. Look for a K-number (AURA is cleared under K243040).
  • Fit and contour. LEDs only help if they sit close to the skin. A contoured mask keeps them at a consistent distance; a flat one over facial curves doesn't. This is why a well-fitted 272-LED mask can outperform a poorly-fitted higher-count one.
