Can you use HSA or FSA funds on a red light therapy mask?
Short answer: it can qualify, but it depends on you. HSA and FSA funds may be used for a red light therapy mask when a licensed clinician recommends it to treat a medical condition, such as acne. Using it for wrinkles or overall skin appearance generally does not qualify, because IRS rules treat appearance-focused care as cosmetic. Your HSA or FSA plan makes the final call.
What you need
- A Letter of Medical Necessity from a licensed clinician who has evaluated you, such as your dermatologist or primary care provider. If your plan has its own form, use that one. If not, use our template.
- Your itemized receipt. Your RIVATA order confirmation email shows the date, item, and price.

Get the letter before you order. Plans often accept only purchases made on or after the letter's date.
Paying with an HSA
- Get your signed Letter of Medical Necessity.
- Order on getrivata.com. If your HSA card is declined, pay with any card and pay yourself back from your HSA.
- Keep the letter and your order confirmation with your tax records.
If the purchase does not qualify, an HSA withdrawal for it is taxable, with an extra 20% tax unless you are 65 or older or disabled (IRS Publication 969).
Paying with an FSA
- Check your plan's rules for light therapy devices. Employer plans can be stricter than IRS rules.
- Get your signed Letter of Medical Necessity, then order with a regular card. FSA cards usually won't work here, because they are limited to healthcare providers and certified stores.
- Submit your order confirmation and the letter to your FSA administrator for reimbursement.
Common questions
Does RIVATA decide if I qualify?
No. Your clinician decides whether the mask is medically necessary for you, and your HSA or FSA plan decides whether to reimburse it.
Who can sign the letter?
A licensed clinician who has evaluated you. The IRS has warned that notes based only on self-reported health information do not turn a personal expense into a medical one.
Can I use HSA or FSA funds for anti-aging?
Generally no. IRS rules exclude care aimed at improving appearance. Eligibility comes from treating a medical condition.
Which masks does this apply to?
The process is the same for the AURA Lite and the AURA 4D. Tick your model on the letter template.
RIVATA does not determine HSA or FSA eligibility and does not provide medical or tax advice. Eligibility depends on your medical situation, your clinician's assessment, and your plan's rules. For questions about your account, contact your plan administrator or a tax advisor.
